I've re-read Horus Rising this weekend, and as you said, this series has many moments where it sort of winks at the reader that already knows 40k, being like "get it? ... get it?". One that stuck out for me this time around was Loken musing about the future and the possible immortality of Astartes: "Loken tried to imagine the future, but the image would not form. Death would wipe them all from history. Not even the great First Captain Ezekyle Abaddon would survive forever. There would be a time when Abaddon no longer waged bloody war across the territories of humanity. Loken sighed. That would be a sad day indeed. Men would cry out for Abaddon’s return, but he would never come." ... oh Loken, you sweet summer child, if only you knew...

I just found this older video of yours, and I'm slowly coming around to the idea that if, as you point out in the video, Games Workshop only cares about the miniatures, and therefore aren't doing a great job balancing it(for a pretty extreme point of comparison, the game rules of Battletech, who started in the same decade as 40K, hasn't had major balance changes in years, and hasn't had a major edition in a decade), the players might just decide to use an alternative ruleset, using the great miniatures GW says it's focusing on.... Everyone is happy, well except GW can't sell rules, but that's its own problem.

Given how you described him I'd make Boris the Emperor of Mankind, Nurgle doesn't mistakenly let a disease run rampant he deliberately creates the diseases. Meanwhile a rushed unification and crusade which misleads literally everyone in the Imperium all to pursue his own personal agenda while allowing his sons to commit any number of atrocities as long as it gets the job done and outlawing psychic powers whilst being the most powerful psyker in the galaxy and experimenting with technology in a manner that few outside the mechanicum are allowed to, sounds rather like a Boris Johnson move. And given how long the Emperor's been alive he's probably got a bunch of illegitimate children running around. At least Nurgle knows who all his children are given how daemons are basically a low level manifestation of the will oftheir patron God. And a bit of historical pedantry on the Liz Truss point, she's the shortest serving individual but the shortest tenure was Arthur Wellesley (Duke of Wellington) whose second tenure lasted 23 days in 1834. Welp… the Leagues of Votann have already done this! They live in even harsher conditions than the Imperium, and they’re unambiguously NOT evil. Maybe not GOOD per say (maybe kinda lawful neutral?), but they definitely show that the Imperium is not the only way. Before the Votann, we could also kind of count the Tau, even though they’re not human, and they have some (comparatively) slight evil undertones. But still.

Good analysis but I actually disagree with most your analysis on brexit, they spent millions trying to convince us to stay in the EU and STILL a majority voted to leave. The only time the UK has been permitted any real democratic autonomy for a long time!

Whatever your views on the ten thousand, the geneforged greatest warriors now having women, we must recognise the reason for "a canon" rather than just calling it "silly". It's called continuity and it allows people to create a continuous story. It's a fundamental tenet of good story telling- a story universe where the "facts", powers, and relationships are relatively understandable. It keeps writers honest and avoids the laziness of changing everything around just for each author's convenience. Like Magnus' narcisim and deep rooted corruption. Imagine if there was a story in the middle where Magnus was just a short dumpy man outgoing man who loved all his brothers and was anti-learning. No problem, apparently for some... after all Games Workshop owns the copyright. Yes, they do, but the fans wouldn't wear it because everything they know about Magnus militates against this. And just because they've done this sloppiness before doesn't mean it's okay the next time.

Maybe make one of these about the Tories' leadership contests during the last 14 years based around the Baddab war or the British cabinets during Brexit or about the EU parliament. I think there is potential for a political wh40k parsdy subchannel 😅

Tomorrow is the second round of the French legislative election, called by Macron after the depressing victory of the far right in the European election. In some ways, I'd like to see this analogy adapted to the French context. In some other ways, I really, really don't.
